The next superintendent of Albuquerque Public Schools can expect a $260,000 annual paycheck - which some say is not quite enough.
On a 4-3 vote Monday, the Albuquerque Board of Education decided to advertise the job at $15,000 less than what its search consultant recommended as competitive pay.
The $275,000 salary suggested didn't sit well with board members, said member Marty Esquivel.
He proposed the compromise $260,000, which was still too high for three board members. Robert Lucero, Berna Facio and Dolores Griego voted against it.
"To support $260,000 shows they are not in touch with this community," Lucero said of the board's majority - Esquivel, Gordon Rowe, Mary Lee Martin and Paula Maes.
"When the average salary in this city is $40,000 a year, how do you justify $260,000?" Lucero said. "This salary is going to make people go nuts."
The board will advertise the salary in its search to replace Superintendent Beth Everitt, who is retiring June 30. The board hopes to select her replacement March 9.
