Here's the set list from Travis Parkin's tribute to road songs last month on "Thursday Afternoon Freeform" on KUNM-FM (89.9):
• "Roadrunner," Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers
• "Hit the Road, Jack," Shirley Horn
• "The Road Goes On Forever," Robert Earl Keen Jr.
• "Tennessee Road," Gary P. Nunn
• "Take Me Home, Country Roads," Toots & the Mayalls
• "Waiting Around to Die," The Be Good Tanyas
• "Road," Nick Drake
• "40 Miles of Bad Road," Dwayne Eddy
Parkin tailors his road-trip lists to his environment, so he wasn't in an urban mood on his recent trip north to Utah.
"In that case, I'm not going to be playing techno, rap and most hip-hop," Parkin said. "If I'm going to be heading toward the majestic mountains of Utah, I'm listening to singer/songwriters or Americana or alt-country, etc., because there are so many great songs in those genres written about the road."
Here are Parkin's other favorites while winding along a ribbon of road:
• "Lost Highway," Greg Ashley
• "500 Miles Away From Home," Peter, Paul & Mary
• "Movin' On," Elvis Presley
• "Ramblin' Fever," Merle Haggard
• "Ramblin' Round Your City," Odetta
• "Memories of East Texas," Michelle Shocked
• "Everybody's Talkin'," Harry Nilsson
• "Gentle on My Mind," John Hartford
• "Key to the Highway," John Lee Hooker
• "Promised Land," Johnnie Allen
• "I've Been Everywhere," Hank Snow
• "Truckin'," Dwight Yoakam
• "Travelin' Light," Buddy Knox
• "Travelin' Man," Ricky Nelson
• "This Land Is Your Land," Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
