A car dealer was dragged across his northwest Albuquerque lot while clinging to a Pontiac driven by a man trying to steal it, Albuquerque police say.
According to a Metro Court criminal complaint, Ernest Perea asked to see the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am on Tuesday afternoon. He wasn't allowed to take a test drive because he lacked a valid license, but sat in the running vehicle to view the electronic odometer.
As dealer Anthony Gibson stood by the open driver-side door, Perea suddenly put the car in gear and accelerated, the complaint says.
Gibson told police he was trapped between the door and the door frame as the car crossed the lot at 20 to 30 mph. Perea eventually stopped and was subdued by Gibson, another employee and a bystander, the complaint says.
Perea, 24, of Albuquerque, was charged with armed robbery.
